At JohnsByrne, responsibility and sustainability aren’t initiatives, we see them as essential to how we think, operate, and innovate every day.
As packaging plays an increasingly visible role in both brand experience and environmental impact, our responsibility is clear: deliver premium, high performance packaging solutions while actively reducing our footprint and supporting our customers’ sustainability goals.
A Measurable Commitment to Environmental Progress
Since establishing our 2021 baseline, JohnsByrne has achieved a 31% reduction in carbon emissions, driven by energy optimization, lean manufacturing, and responsible sourcing. Today, 50% of our electricity comes from renewable energy, independently certified through Green e, and 95% of our operational waste is recycled, significantly reducing landfill use and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions.
Annual carbon accounting enables transparency, accountability, and alignment with evolving ESG expectations. By tracking Scope 1, 2, and key Scope 3 emissions, we’re able to respond to customer disclosures, regulatory requirements, and internal improvement opportunities with confidence and data-backed clarity.
Looking ahead, we’re targeting a 50–60% reduction in emissions by 2030, supported by six decarbonization pillars:
- Energy optimization and renewable transition
- Lean manufacturing and operational efficiency
- Sustainable materials and packaging design
- Responsible supply chain engagement
- Logistics and distribution efficiency
- Data, reporting, and transparency capabilities
Lean Manufacturing: Sustainability in Action
Lean manufacturing is at the core of both our operational excellence and our sustainability strategy. By focusing on doing work right the first time, minimizing variation, and eliminating waste, Lean directly reduces material usage, energy consumption, emissions, and scrap while improving quality, cost, and delivery for our customers.
From process stability to defect reduction and right first-time execution, Lean enables continuous improvement that delivers environmental and business value simultaneously.
Sustainable Packaging by Design
Sustainability starts at the design table. Our structural design team applies a design with intent philosophy, optimizing structures to reduce material use, improve recyclability, and maintain premium brand impact.
Key capabilities include:
- FSC® certified and PEFC certified materials
- 10–100% post-consumer waste (PCW) options
- Recyclable and PFAS compliant inks, foils, and adhesives
- Plastic free and paperboard-based alternatives
- Responsible embellishments and recyclable metallic solutions
We also leverage Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools such as EcoDesign Cloud to quantify carbon footprint, water usage, and resource consumption across the full packaging lifecycle, enabling data driven decisions that balance sustainability, performance, cost, and brand objectives.
Partnering for Customer Success
Sustainability is most powerful when it’s collaborative. By partnering closely with customers, we help navigate evolving regulatory requirements, ESG reporting needs, and consumer expectations.
One recent customer engagement delivered a 56% LCA improvement score through structural redesign, maintaining premium aesthetics while reducing materials, eliminating unnecessary components, improving automation, and lowering costs. It’s a clear example of how thoughtful design, testing, and data can drive both environmental and commercial gains.
Responsible Business, Ethical Operations
Our approach to responsibility extends across governance, ethics, and supply chain transparency. JohnsByrne maintains robust policies and third-party certifications that reinforce accountability, transparency and measurable progress including:
- FSC®, PEFC and Green-e certifications
- ISO 9001 and G7 certifications
- Sedex, EcoVadis, CDP, and Transparency One participation
This framework helps ensure responsible sourcing, ethical labor practices, data integrity, and continuous improvement across our operations and our extended supplier network.
Investing in People and Communities
Our people are central to our success and our sustainability journey. From health and safety to professional development, DEI efforts, and employee engagement programs like Your Voice Matters, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, safe, and empowering workplace.
Beyond our facilities, we actively support community organizations and encourage employee participation through our Green Committee by helping extend our impact beyond operations and into the communities where we live and work.
Looking Forward
Responsibility and sustainability at JohnsByrne are not static goals, they’re a journey built on continuous improvement, transparency, and partnership. As we look toward 2030, we remain focused on delivering premium packaging solutions with measurable environmental responsibility, supporting our customers’ ESG objectives, and advancing what’s possible in sustainable packaging.
